March 29, 2026
For much of our career, success has been defined by a relatively fixed set of metrics—title, compensation, influence and recognition.

For many of us, these still matter.

But they are no longer sufficient.

After a while, a more holistic lens begins to emerge.

One that integrates three dimensions:

The 3 I’s

Sustainable Income – Financial security and freedom
Genuine Impact – Contribution beyond ourself
Inner Harmony – Balance and alignment within ourself

When these three are aligned, life begins to feel not just successful, but whole.

Why the 3 I’s Matter Now
In earlier career stages, it is often necessary to prioritise income and progression.

But in midlife, things become a little different:

Time becomes more precious
Energy becomes more valuable
Meaning becomes more important

This is where many of us feel the tension:

Financially comfortable, yet unsure about purpose
Highly impactful at work, yet disconnected internally
Professionally fulfilled, yet concerned about long-term sustainability

The 3 I’s offer a way to navigate these tensions intentionally.

How the 3 I’s Reinforce One Another
A common misconception is that these three dimensions compete with each other.

In reality, when approached thoughtfully, they amplify one another.

Income Enables Choice

Financial stability creates optionality.

It allows you to:

Take on meaningful work without financial pressure
Explore new paths (portfolio careers, board roles, advisory work)
Invest time in what truly matters (family, friends, community)

Without sufficient income or financial planning, even the most meaningful aspirations can feel constrained.

Impact Creates Meaning

Impact shifts the focus from achievement to contribution.

It could look like:

Mentoring the next generation
Supporting your family in deeper ways
Contributing to causes or communities you care about

Paradoxically, when we focus less on ourselves and more on others, we often experience a greater sense of fulfilment.

Inner Harmony Sustains Us

Without inner balance, both income and impact can become sources of stress rather than fulfilment.

In my view, there are 4 dimensions to Inner Harmony:

Physical vitality
Mental clarity
Emotional resilience
Spiritual grounding

These are the foundation that sustains both performance and purpose over time. At the same time, one can balance the other. For example, when we are feeling mentally drained, a run (physical) or a talk with a friend (emotional) can make us feel more alert.

The Real Question
The question is not:

“Which of the 3 I’s should I prioritise?”

But rather:

“How do I design a life where all three can coexist?”

A Simple Reflection
As you think about your next chapter, consider:

Income: What level of financial freedom do I truly need?
Impact: Who or what do I want to contribute to?
Inner Harmony: What does a well-lived day feel like for me?

You don’t need perfect answers.

But starting with these questions begins to transform how you design your future.

Coming up
In my next few articles in this series, we will explore each of the 3 I’s more deeply:

How to think about Income beyond salary
How to define Impact in a way that is meaningful to you
How to build Inner Harmony as a foundation for fulfilment

Remember, the next chapter of your life is not just about doing more.

It is about living more intentionally.
