" Beyond Heroic Leadership "
It is often thought that leading yourself is about sorting out the motivations of your life and doing deep soul searching - on your own. This is an attractive but deeply flawed idea which appeals to the "hero" mentality in all of us. Nothing could be further from the truth.
We find out how to lead ourselves by being with others; it is an ongoing project which is dependent on other people. We can only discover who we truly are by communion with and feedback from others. At its worst self-leadership is perceived and wrongly reported as an individualist pathway where we think we don't need others. At its best true self-leadership is at its core a collective team and group project.
In 1996 I was fortunate to earn a 2 year diploma in self-leadership at East London University. I learnt the fundamental lesson that whilst to start with I set goals on my own - it was only by working with others that I both refined the goals, knew what I was capable of and found the encouragement of others to reach those goals. Quantum physics has shown us that humans are fundamentally entangled with each other - we are not separate. Leading yourself - by yourself belongs to a bygone age
The adage "we are one" has never been more important as we leave behind the military model of the "solo" leader, and realise that my leadership growth is fundamentally dependant on my sisters and brother's involvement - just as their growth is dependant on me.
