Innovating Icebreakers

with 3 APSS Professional Members

Icebreakers and games are tools used by speakers and trainers for energy management, audience control and audience participation. These tools can engage, entertain, energise and excite audiences. What works? What doesn't? How much is too much?

In this fun and entertaining session, 3 APSS Professional Members will share some icebreakers and games that they use. These will give you ideas from which to create your own unique icebreakers and games, and you'll learn how to avoid the traps that others have fallen into. You'll come out the other side with more audience rapport and control, and your group will have more energy to learn what you're about to teach them.

Facilitation Master Class: An Ethical Dilemma: Cracking the Moral Code for Speakers and Trainers

Facilitated by Tina Altieri

An absolutely fascinating, must-attend evening that no speaker or trainer should miss.

  • What do you do when a speaker goes on before you and uses the icebreaker or game that you designed?
  • What action can you take if another person has ‘borrowed' your material and presented it as their own?
  • How do you respond if it looks like you were discriminated against out of getting a job that you deserved?
  • Is paying or receiving referral commissions appropriate?
  • Is it ethical for speakers to claim that they are "Singapore's #1…" or "Asia's top…"?
  • Is it right for speakers who reduce their fees to outbid other speakers to get a job?
  • How do speakers know whether they are breaching copyright? Is it research or infringement? What about the use of music?

These are dilemmas regularly faced by new and experienced speakers and trainers. We are confronted by issues that affect our principles and values, and challenges that affect the way we work.

In our October meeting, we will tackle head-on the often thorny issues that can keep us awake at night, and we'll provide you with some real solutions and avenues through which you can protect yourself.

Facilitated by our very own Professional Member, Tina Altieri, this will be a not-to-be-missed evening for all speakers and trainers. In her 20 years' experience as a journalist and TV anchor, Tina is very familiar with handling sensitive issues. She will guide us through the ethics maze, and together we'll confront the challenges that impact all speakers during our professional journey.

At the end of the discussion, Tina will deconstruct the session, as well as share tips on how she prepared for it - especially not knowing exactly what was going to happen in the room, and the decisions she made during the evening to facilitate the discussion.

Be sure to attend your APSS meeting on 20 October!
Come along to our October meeting and be part of this APSS ‘First' on Ethics. This will be an electric evening of discussion and debate, and we will aim to craft some APSS recommended guidelines and industry standards on all the topics discussed.

See you on 20 October for an evening you really can't afford to miss!
