Asia Professional Speakers - Singapore
President's Message
Passion .
Purpose .
Progress
It is an honour to be elected as President of Asia Professional Speakers Singapore. I joined APSS five years ago because I've been passionate about speaking since starting my teaching and training career in Singapore in 1983.
I have gained so much from attending APSS meetings and also from networking and developing great friendships. I've learnt even more since becoming involved in the Exco, on which I have served for the last two years. The great thing is that when I became more involved in APSS, I felt even more benefit and gained so much more. I also became even more passionate about the possibilities that exist when we nurture our network and share.
In my training and speaking work, I am passionate about helping people to see the rewards they can gain through improving communication skills and building better relationships. I feel the same about APSS and am proud that I've become a part of the friendly, spirited, sharing community that our association has become.
After many months of work, we are pleased to announce the launch of the new APSS website. Please check it out and let us know what you think.
There are several pages that we are still developing, so please bear with us. If you have any suggestions for what we need to add, please write to Maideen at admin@asiaspeakers.org. If you are a Professional Member please check out the Professional Members page. Please note:
1. If your photo is not there, it's because you did not send us one in reply to our recent mail. Please send it to Maideen.
2. If your one-liner is shorter than you submitted, it's because it was too long for the space available and we had to reduce it. Please submit any amendments to Maideen.
3. Please check your profile page and if you want to change anything, please write to Maideen with clear instructions.
We are working hard with the developers to make our new website a great portal for you. We would love your feedback!

Personal Brand Damage Control:
8 Tips to Stay on Top at Work
by Brenda Bence, CSP
Every day at work, you run the risk of damaging your personal brand - even if you don't think you have one. How is this possible? Well, your personal brand is the way people perceive, think and feel about you in relation to others. The people you work with already have perceptions, thoughts and feelings about you, so just by virtue of being "you" in the workplace, you already have a personal brand.
The question is whether you have the personal brand you want. Is your brand bringing you greater success, or is it actually holding you back? Not knowing the answer to that question can mean the difference between a career that stays land-locked and a career that sky-rockets.
So, what are the best ways to keep your own personal brand damage under control? In this article, Brenda Bence, CSP shares with you her eight top tips. Click here to read the full article.

President Shirley Taylor and Vice President Pamela Wigglesworth, recently attended the National Convention of NSA in Anaheim, California. They had a great opportunity to meet and learn from the giants in the speaking business. Here's Pamela with the legendary Les Brown. "The 4-day NSA Convention was fabulous. Each day offered attendees a full range of subjects to improve your speaking business, as well as main stage speeches from top speakers such as Glenna Salsbury, Lou Heckler and my all-time favourite motivational speaker, Les Brown. Definitely worth my investment!" (Pam Wigglesworth)

Business Tip
Determine all requests before making any concessions:
There is a great negotiating strategy called 'A Piece of the Pie' where the negotiator asks for very small concessions, one at a time, and ends up with the 'whole pie'.
A good negotiator always tries to determine **All Requests** before granting **Any Concessions**. Here is the critical question you must ask when confronted with any request for a concession (no matter how small), "In addition to that, is there anything else you need before we close the deal?". This question forces the other party to reveal their entire agenda before you make that concession.

Speaking Tip
"It must not be your intention to please or satisfy your audience. It must be your intention to amaze them."
(Quote from Les Brown, at NSA Convention Influence '11, Anaheim, California)
