Your Million Dollar Voice: A Professional Speaker’s Voice Equals Income
Presenter: Deborah Torres-Patel

Deborah, world famous celebrity voice coach, treated us to a rousing performance on techniques to improve voice stamina. She shared six useful techniques to boost voice power and ensure audience captivation.
- Adopt the ‘Tower of Power’ stance and allow your voice to come up through your body.
- Lower your voice pitch for greater power and credibility.
- Our voice box is like our limbs - it needs warming up before performing. Use the ‘Hoo-aah’ sound-aspiration exercise to do this. As you slowly breathe out, say “hoo-aah”
- Just as one would do warm-up hamstring stretches before running, so too can you stretch your tongue. We were shown how to stretch our tongue and relax our jaw. I found this tip most useful and have now included this exercise into my daily routine
- Enhance voice projection by imagining you are speaking over the tip of your nose, up to your eye level gaze and across the room in an arc
- Make your words sound like their meaning by adding vocal variety. This could be called the ‘onomatopoeia method’.
Deborah’s voice power certainly worked during her presentation. We enjoyed an entertaining and highly interactive talk, and came away with slightly longer tongues than before!
